Chapter 02
The first time Sho said he likes Ohno was during the Love Rainbow CD jacket photo shoot. They were just goofing off as per usual in front of the camera. All was well until the cameraman said he had to visit the gents and left both of them alone.
Seeing that he was free of the cameras in his face, Ohno did what he would always do in the dressing room. He lay on the couch, took out his handphone and began surfing the fishing websites. He completely didn’t notice how Sho, who was standing in front of him a few distances away, was fidgeting.
Sho meanwhile kept glancing towards the oblivious too-tanned skinned man. Seeing that delighted expression on the latter’s face made his heart pound. Finally, he decided enough was enough and walked towards Ohno determinedly. Ohno continued on fiddling with his phone, ignoring the now standing Sho in front of him. Sho cleared his throat.
“Hmm?” was the reply he got.
“You see, Satoshi,” he began nervously. “I’ve been wanting to tell you something for awhile now.”
“What is it?” the older man carelessly drawled, still engrossing in his phone. Sho sighed and moved forward leaning over Ohno. Grabbing hold of the latter’s phone, he removed it from his grasp and set it aside on the table.
“Sho-kun?” Ohno asked curiously. Sho was now leaning over him, his face far too close for comfort. Sho on the other hand, noticed the position they were in and moved back, blushing. He sat on the coffee table all the while trying to stop the blush but to no avail.
“Sorry, I didn’t realize that I was too near to your private, err I mean personal space…” stuttered the newscaster. Seeing his flustered look, Ohno raised an eyebrow as he rose slightly from his lying position. ‘What is he so embarrassed about?’ he thought.
“What is it?” Ohno enquired, anxiously. The sooner Sho tells him what was bugging him, the sooner he can continue to check up on the new fishing equipments. He had spotted some new information for the new fishing rods that was on sale recently. It had some new functions to the reels and…
“Eh?” Ohno blinked and glanced back at the younger man. He was so lost in thought about the new rods that he totally missed what the latter had said. “Sorry, can you repeat that?”
Sho shifted his eyes to the left, cheeks still a bit red. “I said what do you think of me?”
Silence filled the room. Ohno was shocked. Out of all the members, he expected to hear that from Aiba. Or at least Nino, god knows how he can be so spoilt sometimes. Coming from the man who is a newscaster, Ohno couldn’t think of anyone else brimming of confident than Sho.
“Eh… I think you are a great person?” he said slowly and cautiously. Silence passed again. Ohno glanced at the door. The cameraman sure was taking his time in the loo.
Sho looked at Ohno silently. ‘He must have not get what I meant by the question,’ he mused. 'Trust Satoshi to make it harder for me.’
Ohno’s attention reverted back to Sho when the said man shifted from his position on the table to lean forward once more, though this time giving more ample space between them.
“What I was trying to say, Ohno-san,” Sho began seriously even if he was a nervous-wreck inside. ”Is what do you think of ME?”
Now Ohno might be known as an airhead but even he’s not THAT stupid. He blinked and stared at the fidgety yet serious man. Then he blinked again. ‘There’s no way that he’s asking what I think he’s asking right?’ Ohno thought to himself, shocked.
“Sho-kun, I…” Ohno began but was interrupted.
“I have feelings for you.”
“EH?”
Ohno could only gape at him. The sudden confession left him speechless. Sho closed his eyes and hung his head, waiting for the rejection that was sure to come. Seeing the dejected form of his friend and co-worker, Ohno quickly sat up and tried to think of a way to not hurt him.
‘But what can I say that will not hurt him?’ Ohno thought furiously to himself. 'I can’t say I like him ‘cause I don’t right?’
Just looking at the way the man he knew was so full of confidence, hung his head made him want to cry. Unknowingly, he had hurt his friend in such a cruel way. Shifting forward, he placed both his hands on Sho’s sloping shoulders in attempt to comfort the man.
“Listen Sho-kun,” Ohno said softly. ”I love you...A lot! …But as a friend only.”
Sho shook his head and chuckled. He knew he would be rejected but it still hurts. Though he should be lucky his leader didn’t shun him for feeling this way. He looked up and smiled at the worried look on Ohno’s face.
“It’s fine Satoshi-kun. I’m just happy you didn’t punch me for liking you.” he whispered. Ohno frowned. “How can I hit you for liking a person like me?” he asked confused.
Sho merely smiled gently. That was one of the many reasons he fell in love with this man. His gentleness and non-discrimination. Suddenly the door bang open and Nino as well as Aiba rushed in.
“Hey Nino~ Why did you do that for???”
“Geez I know you’re an idiot but there is a limit to how idiotic you can be.”
“I AM NOT AN IDIOT! Leader! Tell him I’m not an --- What are you guys doing?”
Sho immediately stood up hastily at their appearance. Gesturing at them he asked. “Nothing important. What were you doing to make Nino pissed again Aiba?”
With that he moved towards the excited man, leaving Ohno looking at him worriedly. Nino merely studied the atmosphere silently. He could tell something had happened judging from Ohno uneasiness and Sho‘s lack of humor in his eyes. He walked towards the couch and flopped besides his leader. Putting his arms around the man, he rest his head against the latter’s and he stayed that way.
A few minutes later the cameraman cheerfully returned, oblivious to what had transpired while he was gone.
~*
“That’s all for today. Thanks for your hard work!”
“Yeah~ It’s finally over!” Aiba cheered happily. It’s always a wonder to the other arashi members how Aiba could remain so full of energy even after working for almost a whole day. He was practically skipping while the others were literally dragging their tired bodies back to their dressing room.
“Do you guys wanna have a drink now?” the chirpy man asked. Nino snorted while Jun gave him a ridiculous glare. Ohno was packing his stuffs, trying to ignore the man. Only Sho replied apologetically. “Sorry Aiba-chan. Maybe next time.”
“Ehhhhh?” whined the man. “But that’s what you always said Sho-chan.”
The rest sighed. ‘Here we go again,’ they thought as they readied themselves to hear Aiba’s endless whining.
“You promised you would go on a vacation with me to India too and we still haven’t.”Aiba pouted. Ohno immediately perked up at the sentence, faltering in his packing. ‘A vacation just the two of them?’
He turned around to look at Sho laughing gently as Aiba listed down the things he promised to do. A sudden feel of irritation crept into his heart and Ohno eyebrows twitched. He turned back in a huff and began shoving his clothes into his bag with a bit more force than needed.
Nino who was standing beside him raised an eyebrow in fascination. He had been watching Ohno’s reaction ever since the incident in the dressing room earlier. Seeing Ohno being agitated surprises him more than seeing him worried. And the source of the sudden change in mood was the newscaster. Nino widened his eyes as the answer formed in his quick-thinking brain.
‘No way…’
On the other side of the room, Jun smacked Aiba’s head, conjuring laughter from Sho. “Come on the vans are waiting for us.”
With that, the rest trudged for the door. Nino trailed behind to wait for the quiet man and also to ensure that the others didn’t hear what he about to confirm.
“Hey, Oh-chan,” he began casually, hitching his duffle bag up over his left shoulder. “Did Sho confessed to you?”
Ohno who was digging around for his lighter to light up his cigarette, spun around in shock. Nino looked back indifferently while underneath he was chuckling. Ohno is so easy to read, like an open book.
“How did you know?” the baffled man asked. Nino shrugged. “Just a guess.”
“Well your guess is dead on target,” Ohno muttered resuming his search for his lighter in his pockets.
“So did you hook up?” Nino continued, handing over his lighter which the other man accepted with a nod of thanks. Lighting his cigarette and inhaling the nicotine, Ohno shook his head.
“Why not?” Nino asked curiously.
“Why should I when I do not have a feeling for him?” Ohno asked with an isn’t-it-obvious tone.
“Yeah right, if you didn’t feel the same way, why did you get jealous just now?” The younger said, smirking. Ohno looked at him appalled. “I wasn’t being jealous!” he denied.
Once again Nino shrugged. “Suits yourself Oh-chan,” he chuckled. ”And look, there’s your admirer waiting for you.” He added, pointing to the said van, Sho gesturing for them to hurry up through the wind down car window. Ohno couldn’t help but flushed when he heard Nino teasing voice.
‘He could be a bit more tactful about this.’ he thought angrily. Ignoring Nino’s whistling and hooting, Ohno hurried to the van, quickly throwing the cigarette butt in the rubbish bin after putting it off. Climbing inside, he smiled apologetically at the younger man. He totally had forgotten that since they live near each other now, they took the same van home.
Sho wind up the window once Ohno boarded the van. He waited for Ohno to sit down before speaking. “You guys sure took your time. What were you two doing?” he asked curiously.
“… Nino asked if I was jealous when Aiba said you promised him a vacation.” Ohno answered offhandedly. All Sho could do was stared at the oblivious man, shocked at his straightforwardness.
“You mean Nino knows?”
“Hmm? Yeah somehow he found out.”
“Err... Satoshi,” Sho started unsure how to approach the delicate situation without assuming things. “Why did he say that?”
Ohno who had been staring out of the window turned to look at him.
“I don’t know.” was the simple reply the newscaster received. He then turned back to the scenery outside. Sho frowned, thinking. ‘There must be something Nino saw to say that. Dare I try…?’
Clearing his throat, he pretended to be busy looking for something in his bag. Plucking up his courage, he asked the dreaded question. “Say Satoshi, do you want to give it a try?”
That quiet question sounded deafening loud in the silent van. Ohno slowly turned to face Sho who was still pretending to be rummaging for something in his bag.
“Sho-kun, I told you…”
“I know what you said Satoshi,” Sho cut in. “I just want to know if there is any chance between us. If you’re willing to try this relationship?”
Ohno bit his lips and considered his choices. One of the reasons was of course both of them are men. No matter how much their fans love the fan services between them, they would totally be in shock if they finds out about the relationship. Not to mention how their agency would react. Relationship with a woman was already strongly disapprove of, much less a man.
Another thing to add, he would not want their friendship to be destroy. They have been together for more than 11 years. What if their bond is broken because of his stupid decision?
On the other hand, he couldn’t deny that weird feeling which Nino pointed out was jealousy. He wouldn’t be feeling this way if he did not have any feelings for Sho at all right? But why does he feel this way now? And only after Sho’s confession? All these questions made Ohno’s head spin.
“Sho-kun, I don’t want to lead you on or anything,” Ohno explained. Sho however was unmoved. It seemed he had thrown away all logical sense and reasoning out of the window.
“Just a yes or no Satoshi.” was the reply.
Ohno sighed. Scratching his jaws awkwardly, he relented. If Sho, the one who has always been making the right decisions, are not thinking of the consequences now, why should he, the laidback guy care so much?
“Yes…” he muttered shyly.
Hearing his reply, Sho nodded coolly. Inside though, he felt like screaming out and jumping for joy. Heck he was already refraining himself from winding down the car window and shouting that Ohno’s his boyfriend now. The phrase being on cloud nine? He understands it perfectly well now.
His joy however was interrupted when the van jerked to a stop. Without realizing it, they had already reached Ohno’s house. The driver, Kazuki and their manager, Arata turned around and smirked.
“You guys better not be kissing in front of me now.”
Sho turned beet red and Ohno coughed. They totally had forgotten about the other two passengers. It’s a good thing they have known each other for so long otherwise rumors would fly. Ohno moved to get his bag and squeezed past Sho. Along the way he gave a gentle pat on Sho’s hand.
“See you,” he whispered before getting out.
Sho smiled dazedly, unaware of the leers and teasing of the two men sitting in front. His life was getting more exciting now.
~*
Ohno had been lying on the bed for more than an hour yet he couldn’t find himself to go to sleep. Tossing around for a moment, he finally gave up on sleeping and mulled over the conversation he had in the van with Sho.
He somehow felt excitement building up in him. It had been a while since he was in a relationship and truthfully, he misses the warmth of another person. Ohno closed his eyes to play back the scene. For the first time, he really couldn’t wait to meet up with the rest for their recordings of their variety shows next week.
